Brazil now has more than 1 billion registered Pix keys, led by random keys, and the SPI processed 7.1 billion Pix payments in September.

Registered Pix keys in Brazil have passed 1 billion, according to central bank data reported on October 9, after 9.8 million new keys were created between August and September. The central bank's SPI processed 7.1 billion Pix transactions worth R$3.2 trillion in September.

Why it matters: With about 170 million users, Brazilians hold more than five keys each on average, and random keys, which reveal no personal data, lead with 526 million, more than phone (166 million), CPF (153 million) and email (144.5 million) keys combined. The September total also excludes transfers between customers of the same bank, which are settled inside each institution rather than through the SPI.
