RBI data centre in Bhubaneswar opens to host RTGS and NEFT

The Reserve Bank of India has opened a ₹169 crore data centre in Bhubaneswar that will host RTGS, NEFT and e-Kuber, its first such site outside Maharashtra.

The RBI data centre in Bhubaneswar, a ₹169 crore facility inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 25, will host the Reserve Bank of India’s RTGS and NEFT payment systems and the e-Kuber platform used by governments and banks. Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the complex holds Tier-IV accreditation from the Uptime Institute and will run without third-party cloud providers.

Why it matters: The RBI’s three existing data centres are all in Maharashtra, and Malhotra said the Odisha site, in a different seismic zone, adds protection against localised disruptions for payment systems that operate around the clock. UPI is run by NPCI but settles through RBI systems, Malhotra said, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the same day that UPI now handles more than 2,400 crore (24 billion) transactions a month.
